Original Artworks by Julia Drake"Julz" is a pen name and trademark for the "Birdz" series of paintings, the artistic alter-ego work of well-known New Zealand artist Julia Drake. Julia is a fully established, full-time painter, well known for her characteristically realist local land and seascapes(see www.juliadrake.com).
The anthropomorphic(meaning: attributes of human form through god, animal or thing) "Birdz" paintings have transpired quite spontaneously at this stage of Julia's art career, prompting this new website(www.birdz.co.nz).
Julia Drake quotes: The "Birdz" are purely created from my imagination, I do not use reference and do not feel consciously influenced by any other sources such as animated films. The ideas coming to me, so clearly and with such speed, that, most early mornings, I simply take out a pen and paper and start sketching them up! It's the weirdest and strangest compulsion really! I feel that the "Birdz" have a life of their own, they even have names already! For a "serious" landscape painter I'm quite taken by surprise by this joyful artistic expression, a somewhat alter-ego of myself?!"
